Sky is to offer an internet television service that will rival Netflix, which launched in the UK earlier this year.
Customers will be able to subscribe to the internet service or watch programmes on a pay-as-you-go basis.
Internet television is heading steadily forward in the UK, with the recent launch of Netflix and the ongoing success of Amazon’s LoveFilm. The Sky service will probably launch in the next few months, at around the same time as YouView, the on-demand collaboration between BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Channel 5, BT, Arqiva and Talk Talk.
Content will be available to view via internet-connected TVs, PCs, laptops, games consoles and mobile devices such as smartphones.
The news follows yesterday's announcement that Sky will be providing a BBC iPlayer and ITV player on-demand service through Sky's Anytime +.
